May 2008 Newsletter Supplement :: May 05, 2008.
Hello Guild,
The link below will take you to a pdf download of the proposed text of the
updated SFBAPG bylaws that will be put before the membership in our upcoming
election. Our bylaws require that a copy of the proposed changes be made
available to the membership before the vote. Since we have taken this
opportunity to do a general update, the entire proposed text of the bylaws
is included here as part of your May 2008 newsletter. Please take the time
to read the text before the May 25 newsletter deadline so that if you have
any concerns they can be addressed before the ballot is printed (the ballot
will be included in the June newsletter.)
Thanks

Make sure to check out the huge Calendar section this month. It is great to
see so many puppet shows for May in the Bay Area, both for children and
adults. I urge you to go to as many as you can, to support the art of
puppetry in the Bay Area and to see what your fellow guild members are
doing!

puppets featured in today's SF Chronicle :: May 05, 2008.
Hi all,
There's an article in today's SF Chronicle (front page of the Datebook, with
a big picture of guild treasurer Valerie with frogs) featuring puppets made
by Magical Moonshine for the upcoming Berkeley Opera Company show opening
this Sat. Here is a link to it:

All of the photos are us rehearsing with the puppets (puppets are very
photogenic), and there is some nice discussion about using puppets in
theatre/opera in the text. I think this is a growing trend to watch (or a
wave to catch!) Your guild board is considering a plan to regularly
(monthly?) contact theatre companies in the Bay Area by email to ask if they
are using puppets in an upcoming production so we can advertise it to our
members. If they are, we advertise it to the members, serving our
membership and helping their ticket sales. If they are not, they may
eventually start thinking about doing so, just because each month someone
brings up the idea of puppets again and again (that would be the guild in
the email asking if they are using puppets!)

WHEN: August 4-29, 2008
WHERE: Windsor, Nova Scotia
COST: $1130 CDN (tax included)
Since its inception in 1972, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has won
international acclaim for its multi-disciplinary approach to theatre for
family audiences. New productions are created over several years through a
continuing process of experimentation and collaboration. Our performers
serve as co-creators, musicians, dancers, actors, designers and technicians.
ANIMOTION is simultaneously an exploration of, and preparation for, the
demands of our style of theatre. The four-week intensive program is intended
for those with a strong interest in puppetry and physical theatre and the
desire to expand their range of abilities.
If you or anyone you know are interested in learning more about the
workshop, please contact me directly.
Thanks,
