Your Regional Director seeks your input :: September 28, 2005.
Dear Guild Members: This insert was included in the mailed-out version of the October Newsletter, but you can reply by email and save a stamp (and a tree!)
Your Regional Director seeks your feedback. Please reply back to kkruszka csub dot edu
I wanted to let all of you know, even if your guild is not active, that the region is currently discussing a very important issue and would love your feedback on it. Please include this in your next newsletter or discuss it at your next meeting.
The proposal brought forth at the National meeting:
Concern was expressed that individuals from our region were not running for the National Board of Trustees for the POA due to the high
financial cost incurred in order to attend annual meetings and functions. There are some funds set aside for the Trustees (the Traffle), but they do not cover all expenses. It was decided to see if we can collect voluntary funds from our regional membership (and not taking funds from any other already established area) to help offset their costs.
Mary Decker, as you may know, has recently accepted a position on the
Board of Trustees. We have spoken and she knows we will probably not
have this system in place in time for her first Annual Meeting (Phoenix - January 2006) but wants us to discuss the issue more thoroughly before we present it to the National board for approval.
Some questions to discuss are:
Do you want the region to collect funds to help support trustees from
our Region? (yes or no) These funds would not be used for the Regional Director or Elected Officers. These funds would only be allotted to Trustees.
If yes, what should those funds cover? (Airfare only, meals, room,
stipend, rental car) What limits or conditions should be placed on the funds? (Reimbursed from receipts/ set dollar amount per day for expenses)
What should happen if more than one person from our region is on the
board? Do we fund them equally?
So that you know how I feel, I believe that we can raise funds from
individual voluntary contributions to cover:
Round Trip Airfare - coach class only
Hotel Fees based upon double/shared occupance rates for that hotel
A set amount (to be determine by the region) of funds each day to be
used by the trustee to cover meals/expenses. These amounts can be taken from the current standards set by the IRS for daily expense deductions according to geographic area.
We will not fund:
A rental car. The trustees should plan their meetings knowing they
need to combine resources to move about the city. Additional receipts for meals/expenses beyond the amount allotted.
In the event we have more than one trustee, I believe each should be
funded equally out of the entire fund.
Expenses per person can be about $1000 per trip for everything. Spread about our region, we could do this if only 50 people donated $20. I am sure we have more members than that, and perhaps some individuals would want to donate more. Donations will receive receipts and be tax-deductible. Just think if you run for the board how nice it would be to not have to incur these costs. If you feel that a lot of the POA business is East Coast heavy, than this is perhaps what we need to do to let our fellow POA members know that great things are happening out West and that we are willing to support our Trustees to make sure that our voice is heard on the National level.
Feel free to email me back and to share this with your members.
My best to you all,
Kamala Kruszka

Jerry Juhl :: September 28, 2005.
Very sad news. Today, at the Muppet stamp unveiling in North Hollywood, California, Brian Henson announced that Jerry Juhl passed away on Monday evening. The Henson Company will be posting an official statement on their website soon.
Jerry lived in Northern California. He was an open, kind, gracious person and will be sorely missed. Permanent link to this entry.
Help with your input :: September 28, 2005.
Dear Guild Members,
Your president and board are working hard to serve you, but need your input in order to know what kind of meetings and activities you would like for your guild. The turn out for the September Guild event at the Jarvis Conservatory's Puppet Festival was much lower than expected. Filling out the brief survey below might help your board understand why this meeting/activity did not happen as planned, and help serve your needs better in the future. Please feel free to elaborate on your answers if you wish and answer only those that apply to you.
Did you by chance attend the performance/meeting in Napa without the
discount (and wonder where the guild was?)
Did you feel that $25.00 (the price after the discount) was too high for the event? Do you feel that guild meetings should always be free, or, if taking place at an event with admission, under a certain amount for entrance? How much would you think appropriate?
Did the particular shows offered (Parasol Puppets and Huber Marionettes) not interest you (or had you seen them before?)
Would you have come that night if it were not for other plans you had?
Did the time of day or location effect your decision not to attend?
Did your experience at a previous guild performance event with admission (ex. Black Light Theatre of Prague) influence your decision not to attend?
What is your idea of a "don't miss" guild meeting?
You may send your response to me (your newsletter editor) and all
information will be tabulated without your name, and shared with the board to be used to create more enticing guild meetings in the future. My email is mail magicalmoonshine dot org - You may also send it to any other board member you wish. PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU SEND IT TO THE SFBAPG EMAIL LIST IT WILL GO OUT TO EVERYONE WITH YOUR NAME- THIS WILL HAPPEN IF YOU MERELY "REPLY" TO THIS MESSAGE. You may, of course, do this as well, and share your views on the open forum, but if you wish your answers to be private, copy and paste my email address into the "To" line of your email response and reply that way.
Yours,
Michael Nelson

P of A Message to Guilds and Regions :: September 23, 2005.
The Boards of UNIMA-USA and PUPPETEERS OF AMERICA express profound sympathy and support for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. We stand in solidarity with our fellow puppeteers who were affected by this catastrophe. We urge all puppeteers to help the relief effort by supporting The Red Cross, The Salvation Army and other established organizations who are leading the charge to restore normalcy in the region. The puppeteers we have contacted from the affected area are deeply grateful for the care and concern expressed by other puppeteers.
Two programs that are aiding artists that have come to our attention are: http://www.AmericansFortheArts.org/EmergencyRelief, and http://craftemergency.org/programs/relief/offer Permanent link to this entry.
newsletter deadline sept 25 :: September 21, 2005.
Dear Fellow Guild Members,
Just a reminder that you only have a few more days to send your newsletter editor your material for the October newsletter. Please send your articles, reviews, stories, classifieds, commentaries, calendar listings to mail magicalmoonshine.org - Also, I had hoped to run some Halloween show images but so far have received none (which means you have a great chance to see YOURS in the newsletter if you send it!) If you can send pictures in a lower, internet ready resolution, that would help me with my slow, dialup connection. If you don't know how to lower the resolution on your photos, let me know and we will look for help for you.
I have had some good comments on the newsletter, and that is thanks to YOUR HELP. I could not do this without your input and submissions. The newsletter is a way to communicate and stay in touch for the guild as well as one of our best ways of attracting new members to the puppet community. Use the newsletter as a promotion device at your shows to encourage new puppet enthusiasts to join the guild!
All the best,
Michael Nelson
Newsletter Editor
PS. If you miss the sept 25 deadline, send it anyway. I might be able to get it in, and if not, there is always the next newsletter. Permanent link to this entry.

Itamar, a popular character in Israeli children's literature, was
created by one of the most important Israeli writers, David Grossman.
Itamar has an amazing gift - at night when everyone is asleep he
walks on walls. He climbs up the walls of his bedroom and enters one
of the pictures. "When you enter a picture you see and hear things
that you don't see and hear from the outside."
The play is especially rich visually and utilizes a variety of
puppetry techniques. Music and songs were especially written for the
production.
A prize winner in the Haifa Festival, Sharona Shapiro's "Ameritsa
Theater" has successfully performed in Israel and in many
international festivals in Europe and Asia during the past seventeen
years. Sharona performs in Hebrew and English.
