Dear Guild Members,
This is a reminder of Michael & Valerie's Little Blue Moon Theatre show coming up on December 11 at Wild Swan Aphrodisiacs studio space in Napa. Doors open at 7:00pm, show starts around 7:30.

Lora (of Wild Swan) got a great write up in the Napa Valley Register yesterday (Saturday--front page, business section -Napa Warehouse Shifts to Female Energy http://napanews.com/templates/index.cfm?template=story_full&id=AB6911FC-880B-4287-9513-6EB3583CBDC1 ) and the article promoted the 12/11 performance along with other events at the warehouse throughout the day.

The performance will also be listed in the Chronicle's Pink Section, so you are getting advanced warning! There are only 40 seats (a number of which have already been reserved). Call Lora to reserve your seats today (7O7-252-225three).

The show's theme, Winter In The Tropics, will be highlighted in Little Blue Moon's World Premier of its version of Mutiny on the Bounty, complete with sailing ships, island dancing girls, and men with tattoos. Also performed with it will be Natalie and Tango for Tarzan.

The shows will be accompanied by LIVE MUSIC by the Little Blue Moon Theatre Orchestra and special guest artist Steve Ventrello, accordion stylist, playing marvelous traditional French café songs and dark, exotic tangos.

Little Shop Horrors at Golden Gate :: November 23, 2004.

(Update: I just confirmed that the lecture/demo is happening on Thursday. -Matt)
This message comes from SFBAPG co-president, Randal Metz:

The current Broadway production at the Golden Gate Theatre is "The Little Shop of Horrors." I saw it and it was great. I purchased my tickets through Ticketmaster. Go to http://www.ticketmaster.com/venue/229395. Also, the phone number can be found on Golden Gate theater recording.

Show: Little Shop of Horrors. Featuring puppets made by the Jim Henson workshop. Traditional muppet-like figures, costume figures and giant hydraulic mechanical figures.

Theater: Golden Gate Theater, San Francisco.

Time: 8:00 pm. Thursday, December 2nd

SHOW CLOSES DECEMBER 5th.

SPECIAL EVENT ON THURSDAYS!
Meet puppeteers Michael Latini of Henson Productions and Paul McGinnis from the Los Angeles area. After the Thursday (only) performances, they bring out the plant puppets for all interested theatergoers and answer questions. They are very nice. Rhonda and I got to go backstage after the show and see the figures up close. Quite exceptional. The last mechanical plant is so heavy and large that it's bending the floors of the stage!

Please contact the theater directly to make sure the Thursday lecture/demo is happening. Michael and Paul were almost 98% sure it was happening every Thursday. (They've done it every Thursday so far.) They would love to meet other puppeteers. Just identify yourself.

Nov. 9 - FREE Wayang Bali Performance with shadowmaster LARRY REED :: November 04, 2004.

ShadowLight Productions
is pleased to announce
a free Wayang Bali performance
by Shadowmaster Larry Reed

Tuesday November 9, 2004
7:30pm
UC Berkeley - Morrison Hall, Room 125
with live musical accompaniment by
Lisa Gold, Nick Robinson, Carla Fabrizio, and Paul Miller

"Who knows when time began. When earth, wind and
fire trembled and quaked into being..."

Wayang Bali, the Balinese Shadow Play, is one of the most exciting undiscovered events of world theater. Until recently language barriers have kept its drama and humor hidden from the world at large. Larry Reed and his gamelan musicians make it possible for Western audiences to enjoy this classical form of storytelling.

Wayang Bali has been awarded the puppetry's highest award,
the UNIMA-USA Citation for Excellence.

The shadow play blends high drama, improvisation, and slapstick comedy. Its techniques have passed from generation to generation for thousands of years. At least twenty carved leather puppets are manipulated by one puppeteer, the Dalang, meaning "Shadow master." He is the conductor, director, stage manager, and all the actors of the production.

Behind him, four gamelan musicians follow his moves and take their cues from the action on the screen, creating a wave of sound effects and melodies on bronze metallophones. The flickering of a coconut oil flame behind the white screen adds mystery and excitement, giving an unearthly dimension of compelling beauty to the lacy shadow figures.

Balinese theater takes place in two languages simultaneously, the ancient language and the language of the audience. Larry Reed brings the tradition to English, French, Spanish, German, and Indonesian speaking audiences.

Plots for the shadow play are drawn from the Mahabharata myth cycle: five brothers are pitted against one hundred jealous cousins in a struggle for power involving gods, demons, magical weapons, and the inevitable beautiful princess.

The stories give people a chance to see themselves through the mirror of the mythic history; to view their current situation through a timeless perspective. The improvisational element of Balinese theater makes each performance a unique event.

Charlie Chin & the Jataka Puppet Theater at the Asian Art Museum :: November 02, 2004.

This comes from fellow SFBAPG member, Lettie Schubert:

Just got a flyer from the Asian Art Museum - On Sunday November 14th from 10 to 4, is the Fall Family Festival. Free with museum admission. All kinds of events but the one that caught my eye (naturally) was the Jataka Puppet Theater with Charlie Chin. 2:00 - 2:30 p.m.

"Using the teaching tales first related by the Sakya Buddhists of Tibet (one of the four Tibetan Buddhist Orders) to its followers, the Jataka Puppet Theater uses Asian and European puppet traditions to bring these enduring, popular and insightful stories to life. "

Anyone know this theater company? Contact Lettie Schubert at lettiesatix.netcom.com.

For a detailed schedule of the day's events at the Asian (200 Larkin Street, San Francisco), visit: http//www.asianart.org/familiesandkitds.htm#familydays
